Chapter Ten

Wade watched Hayden saunter to the house. Her ebony curls swung in time with her step. She turned back and smiled at him, “You better get moving. You’re going to be late for dinner.”

He jogged to her side and they entered the house together.

“There’s nothing like a good ride to breathe life into you.” Audrey patted him on the back, but gestured toward Hayden. “Look at the sparkle in your eyes.”

Hayden blushed slightly at the unwanted attention drawn to her, but Wade was hard-pressed to dispute Audrey’s words. The heavy cloud that lately hung around Hayden was gone, and her eyes sparkled with an intensity that had always drawn him in. Her bright smile and sweet laughter brought back memories and dreams he’d long since let go.

As if he didn’t have control over his limbs, his hand found its way to the small of her back.

She didn’t pull from his touch, but he saw uncertainty on her face when she said, “I’m going to get washed up and will be down in a few minutes.”

As he watched her climb the stairs, he questioned his motives in bringing Hayden here. This was supposed to be a rescue mission, not a lover’s retreat.

Since Hayden came back into his life, he hadn't been sure where he was going with her. A relationship hadn't been part of his plan. She was lost, and he wanted to help her. That was the extent of his plans.

Today had brought back a flood of memories. Holding her in his arms a few moments ago hadn’t helped clear his head any, either.

“Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes.”

He turned at the intrusion of Audrey’s voice. Her knowing smile caused him to nod his head sheepishly. “Yeah, I’d better wash up as well.”

When Wade descended fifteen minutes later, he found Hayden standing on the porch, staring out at the setting sun. Unable to read her mood, he was afraid he'd lost her.

She turned as he approached, uncrossed her arms, and greeted him with a warm smile.

He released a breath that he’d been unaware he was holding.

“Audrey said they’re down at the pavilion.”

As if it were second-nature, his hand reached for the small of her back. “Thanks for waiting for me.”

Her soft pink lips titled in another saucy smile as she slipped her arm through his. “Well, I wouldn’t want to tarnish your boy-scout image. I had to let you escort me to dinner.”

“I’m very grateful.” He put his hand atop her smaller one that lay along his bicep. He silently and wordlessly prayed on the short trip. A simple utterance of an open-ended please was all that ripped across his heart and wafted up toward heaven. Please let her find her way to You. Please help me guide her through whatever darkness surrounds her. He knew those were there, but another plea surfaced. Please let her stay by my side.

During dinner, Hayden asked Audrey why she decided to open up the recovery ranch.

The tone immediately changed, but before Hayden could feel bad for asking the question, Audrey spoke up.
